Glen Kirk Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Staff Wine Review

Smooth and Tasty

The Speyside region of Scotland is famous for whiskeys such as Macallan and Balvenie. This one is more like Pinch, “The Dimple”, an old-time civilized blend of Single Malts. at half the price. If you are looking for a big jolt of smoke, peat or salt water, look elsewhere. But for a smooth drink, with soda or on the rocks at an attractive price, a good choice. Comes in a gift tube as well. Don’t confuse it on the shelf with Glen Kirk’s upper scale 12 Year version at almost twice the price.

Kirkland 12 Year Old Blended Scotch

Kirkland Blended Scotch Whisky 12 Year

Staff Wine Review –

Good Booze. 12 Year Old Scotch Deal

12 Year Old Blended Scotch at this price gets our attention. Unlike several of the Kirkland spirits, this one was better neat or on the rocks, with soda or water than mixed with full-flavored mixers. Terrific value. Bearing this in mind, this would make a good party or bar pour. Just keep it away from complicated sweeter cocktails.

Take a shot neat – Caramel Color, Moderate Peat aroma. Robust peat and butterscotch in the mouth. No mid notes. Mild burn on the finish.

Rocks –  Mild peat, sweet toffee aromas. Easy burn free finish. Lingering subtle peat and burn sugar.

Simple Cocktail – Rusty Nail – Smooth but a bit of a bit too much of a peat aftertaste. Fine in a Scotch and soda.

Compared to – Johnny Walker Black which has a much softer finish and is fine in any role. A bit of an unfair comparison perhaps.

Overall – The Kirkland is better neat and on the rocks than in a mixed cocktail. Just fine with soda, water or ice.
